I told Joel that no, I did not have a business plan. I told him I didn't really see the point, since I was the only one in my business, and I knew what I wanted to do. Joel then asked me a series of questions I'll never forget.

"So, what's your vision for your company?"

"Ummm...I want to train salespeople to be better at selling."

"OK. How many salespeople do you want to train?"

"Well...they get better salespeople."

"And what does that mean? How do you quantify 'better'?"

"Ummmmm...."

"OK. Let's take a different approach. What's your mission?"

"Well...to create a generation of better salespeople?"

"You don't seem convinced. OK, what about your goals? Strategies? Actions? You at least have your goals written down somewhere, don't you?"

"Well...uhhh...*gulp*..."

This was one of those conversations that you remember for a long time. I realized, at that very moment, why nothing was working the way I wanted it to in my business. It was because I had no idea how I wanted my business to work!! That was a huge epiphany for me, and it literally changed the face of my business.

Git 'er Done

Joel recommended that I immediately formulate a written business plan, one with specific objectives, but I still put it off. I was overwhelmed by the idea of all of the research and work that would have to go into writing the plan.
